What is a server and what is it used for? We explain it simply and concretely.
A server is a special type of computer. Its main task is to provide resources, data, or services to other devices—called clients—over a network, usually the internet.

How does a server differ from a regular computer?

- It is equipped with powerful processors, such as Intel Xeon or AMD EPYC, which handle heavy workloads.
- It features significantly more RAM and fast SSD or NVMe drives, allowing it to process data efficiently and reliably.
- It allows for remote management, e.g., via IPMI or iLO interfaces, which simplifies administration.
- It has advanced cooling and emergency power systems, which protect data and ensure business continuity even during a failure.
- It is often installed in professional server racks, which organize the infrastructure and facilitate servicing.
Basic server components
- CPU – the heart of the server, responsible for computing power,
- RAM – operating memory, guarantees smooth system operation,
- SSD / HDD drives – store data, applications, and the system,
- Power supply – often dual, so the server operates even in the event of a failure,
- Network card – enables connection to the network and other devices.
What is a server used for?
Servers are used for, among other things:
- web hosting,
- storing and sharing files,
- managing email,
- running applications and databases,
- creating environments for CMS platforms (e.g., WordPress, Joomla),
- remote work and data exchange in companies.
Types of servers – which one to choose?
A dedicated server is a physical machine dedicated only to you. It gives maximum power, full control, and high reliability. It works great for large projects and high-load systems.
A VPS (Virtual Private Server) is a virtual server operating on shared infrastructure. It provides flexibility, independence, and good performance. It is a popular choice for a limited budget.
A shared server shares resources among many users. It costs less and is well-suited for small websites, blogs, and online business cards.
Do you need your own server?
Not always. In many cases, web hosting will work better. This is a ready-made environment that allows you to quickly launch a website or store without configuring the infrastructure.
